With “physicality and aggressiveness.” That’s how artist Dominique Simmons describes her pastel technique. “I rely on scumbling, a pastel technique that involves dragging the pastel lightly across the surface, allowing the layers underneath to be seen,” Simmons said in the description for her exhibit “Material Evidence II,” opening Friday, July 15 at the ACANSA Gallery in North Little Rock’s Argenta District. “The content in the pastel work is commensurate to the form; the stories are gritty and irreverent, often referencing religion, morality and sexuality.”

Maybe it’s the way the political landscape is feeling these days, but “physicality and aggressiveness?” Hard same here, Dominique! The exhibit opens tomorrow night in conjunction with Third Friday Argenta Art Walk. Grab a snack from Brood & Barley or a drink from Flyway and check out work from Sherry J. Williamson at Bang Up Betty while you’re down there; Williamson is donating 20% of her sales to the vital work that Arkansas Abortion Support Network does.
