Country singer-songwriter and White County native Bonnie Montgomery has blessed us with “Modern-Day Cowgirl’s Dream,” her first new song since 2021. Accompanying the tune is the announcement that Montgomery has joined Gar Hole Records, home to Nick Shoulders and Jude Brothers. The Fayetteville label will release her upcoming full length, “River,” on Friday, Nov. 3.

So many songs have been written about the hardships and complications of a life spent on the road that one forgets that being a nomad can actually be unadulterated fun. In the bouncy “Modern-Day Cowgirl’s Dream,” Montgomery recalls wondrous run-ins with strangers across The Lone Star State, like a “ranch hand” she dances with in Houston and the “lovely Mrs. Rose” who hosts her in Austin. It’s unclear whether these encounters are platonic or romantic, but she wakes up “in the morning to my fingers and my toes / feeling like that Texas yellow rose,” so the hospitality must have been pretty darn good if things didn’t get saucy.
